Dear Editor,
I am excited to submit our manuscript entitled “Timing of Dietary Fatty Acid Intake and the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes: Insights from the China Health and Nutrition Survey” for your consideration at [Journal Name]. This research delves into the promising area of Chrononutrition, examining how the timing of dietary fatty acid intake may influence the risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D).
As diabetes rates continue to escalate worldwide, particularly in China, it is increasingly vital to understand the relationship between meal timing and metabolic health. Our study employs a comprehensive dataset from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (1991-2015), with participation from 14,518 individuals. Using Cox proportional hazards models, we investigated the associations between the timing of fatty acid consumption and T2D risk, revealing significant correlations with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and plant-based monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs). Notably, we found that higher evening intake of n-3 PUFAs and P-MUFAs was associated with a reduced risk of T2D, with statistically significant trends observed (P trend = 0.032 for n-3 PUFAs; P trend = 0.002 for P-MUFAs). The most pronounced differences in fatty acid intake corresponded to a 19% and 29% reduction in T2D risk, respectively. Furthermore, our isocaloric substitution models suggested that modifying fatty acid intake across meal times could lower T2D risk by 22% and 20%.
These results underscore the importance of dietary timing in the prevention of T2D and contribute significant insights to nutrition epidemiology. We believe our work offers a novel approach to dietary strategies for enhancing metabolic health.
